The episode title said it all "The Change in the Game", but in Bones season finales in the past there has been much build up with little pay off. These have included the dream/coma sequence of season 4, followed by Booth (David Boreanaz) last year shipping off to Afghanistan and only going for a chaste hand hold with Brennan (Emily Deschanel). This year though the ending was a lot more 'who and the what now?!' Be warned if you haven't seen the finale and intend to, stop here as there are major spoilers ahead.
So yes that really did just happen and I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it. After last weeks ambiguous 'did they/didn't they' moment we got secure confirmation that it was indeed the former of these two options, as Brennan revealed to Booth at the end of the finale that she is pregnant... and he is the father. The main reason for my somewhat dismay to the story is that it has all happened off camera, I know the reason for this is to make the impact of that last scene have more zing, but by not showing it they are surely annoying the hell out of the part of the audience that have invested a lot of time in to this show and wanting these two to be a couple. This also poses the question of whether they have been having a month long secret affair or if in the true style of TV she got pregnant from that one time that was alluded to last week. Either way this new development is one of huge proportions for the show and will likely propel them towards coupledom. Though Booth is the marrying kind whilst Brennan clearly isn't, striking one of the many opposites that makes this relationship the unique one that is is and making the fact that they are now having a baby together all the more intriguing. This isn't the first time that the pair have discussed having a child together but before it was in a completely sterile and non romantic manner, this accidental pregnancy is a completely different story.
Going in to a season finale you know that the last 5 minutes are going to have some big moments, especially when it is hyped up beforehand but I didn't expect the bombshell to be this big. Maybe my guard was down because the Bones finales have felt like a bit of let down in the past or because I believed the writers when they were super vague about not writing in Emily Deschanel's real life pregnancy in to the show. Executive producer Stephen Nathan has told Entertainment Weekly that the pregnancy idea was discussed before Deschanel also found out that she was also pregnant, making this story one of happy coincidence and meaning that they won't have to think of any camera or prop tricks to hide the growing bump.
In other baby news in the finale Angela (Michaela Conlin) and Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) had theirs in what has been my favourite story of the year on Bones. Their baby boy was healthy, with no signs of the LCA that they had feared but had acknowledged could be a reality that they could face together. The boy was named Michael Staccato Vincent Hodgins, which was a lovely nod to the recently deceased 'squintern' and he is already equipped with a Billy Gibbons like cap. Whilst these scenes weren't part of the big 'holy wow' moment of the night they were the right amount of humorous and tender and emphasised why these two are really the heart of the show.
What did you all think? Are you happy with the final reveal of the episode? Annoyed that their romantic relationship has started off camera? Excited for what this means next season? Let us know in the comments below.
